Summary

The Naz Legacy Foundation is a UK-based charity, which seeks to promote excellence in education and positive integration into British society. The Foundation was established to continue the legacy of the late Naz Bokhari OBE.

Description

The Naz Legacy Foundation is a registered charity which aims to promote excellence in education and positive integration into British society through supporting key initiatives and charities within these sectors.  We show that through promoting the best in education and acting as ambassadors in the voluntary public service sector, we can make a positive change in society and leave a legacy to benefit generations to come.

Diversity Programme

Naz Bokhari would take his children from a young age to art galleries, museums and to the theatre.  He enriched their learning and education with culture and arts which was an alien concept to most ethnic minorities at that time.  Each year, the Foundation organises its Diversity Day Programme which enables young people from deprived and minority communities to visit our great cultural institutions for the first time.

Over 1,000 young people from our most deprived communities have benefited from the Diversity Programme, raising their aspirations and learning about the importance of the great institutions of state, voting, and role of the Royal Family. The programme has included visits to Clarence House and St James Palace with members of HRH The Prince of Wales’ charities and the Deputy Private Secretaries running inspirational sessions.

Annual Reception

The Foundation organises an annual event, which brings together educationalists, philanthropists, politicians and youth leaders to inspire them to continue the legacy of the late Naz Bokhari OBE.  Previous events have been held at Ernest Bevin College (Naz’s former School), Parliament and the London’s prestigious Living Room at City Hall.  Speaker have included guests such as HRH Princess Badiya, Secretary of State for Education, Secretary of State for Communities, Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Justice, Leader of the House of Commons, Attorney General, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change and Mayor of London.

The Foundation has brought together over 1,000 leading educationalists, philanthropists, politicians and youth leaders at our annual receptions which has developed new networks and working relationships to improve education for all our communities

Naz Bokhari Award

The  Foundation has mobilised educationalists and professionals to volunteer their time to help promote excellence in education. Through creating the Naz Bokhari Award, the Foundation has encouraged local businesses to raise funds to support deserving students who have achieved a university place despite adversity. They also support them by providing work experience, placements and mentoring. The winners receive a letter of congratulations from the Secretary of State for Education.

Honorary Fellowship of Education

The Foundation established this honour in memory of the late Naz Bokhari OBE.  The first Muslim head teacher in the UK.  Naz embodied all the best values of the teaching professional.  He was a great educationalist who was also a Muslim.  Each year the Foundation awards someone who demonstrates outstanding contribution to the field of education.  Previous fellows include HRH Princess Badiya (founding chair of HRH Prince of Wales mentoring charity Mosaic), Sandy Nairne (former Director of the National Portrait Gallery), Ann Mroz (editor, Times Educational Supplement) and Dame Martina Milburn (Prince’s Trust).

Community Integration Events

The Foundation organises high-profile community integration events.   The Foundation organised the first interfaith iftar event at Lambeth Palace in 2016 which brought together the Archbishop of Canterbury, Chief Rabbi, Mayor of London (Naz’s former student and mentee) and over 100 youth leaders from each of London’s boroughs representing all faiths and none.  The event was covered in the mainstream media and the ‘selfie’ taken at the event went viral with high profile celebrities like JK Rowling and Ashton Kutcher promoting the event. In 2017, Cardinal Nicholls hosted the second interfaith iftar, alongside the Mayor of London and Chief Rabbi, as well as young leaders from across the capital.
