Summary

A mobile soup kitchen, serving the homeless and needy in the local community.

Description

One of the busiest projects of the Myriad Foundation, the Soup ‘N’ Smiles project is a mobile soup kitchen based in the heart of Manchester at Piccadilly Gardens. What started off with a bit of soup, a few slices of bread and a handful of service users over three years ago, has now rapidly grown into being a key service for many of the homeless and needy in Manchester.

With hot meals being provided by organisations such as The Food Box, the Myriad Foundation is able to serve over 140 people on a weekly basis.

As always, it is the volunteers who make the real difference. With a greater number of volunteers (including other local charities and organisations), Soup ‘N’ Smiles has been able to provide a lot more than just food as many service users are able to receive toiletries, clothing and a friendly face to let them know they do matter.

As well as providing our service users with necessary provisions, the Soup ‘N’ Smiles team places a lot of emphasis on social interaction with service users. From our own experiences, they are extremely grateful for the food provided, but it is having even the shortest of conversations with them that makes the difference.

However, more can be done to help the needy in Manchester. With queues at the Soup ‘N’ Smiles project expanding, this will require more to come forward and help those in our local communities most in need of our help. Whether it is making some soup, handing out meals to the needy or just having a friendly conversation, there will always be something for you to do.

As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated,
“He is not a believer who eats his fill while his neighbour is hungry”
